England 927 is a heritage movement, not a political one. Here is what we are asking for, what this is not, and who it belongs to.
Where we stand
A birthday is not a border. Everyone who is interested, is welcome.
No party, no faction, no side to be on: a shared day, and a month of history around it.
Is this a political movement?
No. "England 927" is a heritage movement, not a political one. It is not tied to any party, it does not campaign against anyone, and nobody here speaks for a faction. The ask is a shared day of acknowledgment and celebration, the kind most countries already have.
Is this about nationalism?
Celebrating where a country came from does not require deciding who belongs in it. Every background, every faith (or none), every family, every visitor: if you call this country home, or you simply love or are curious about its history, the day, the month, are yours. If anyone tries to fly the 12th of July as a banner for something else enitrely, they will receive no affiliation from us.
Why the 12th of July?
On that day in 927, the Kings of Britain met at Eamont Bridge and acknowledged Æthelstan as ruler of all the English. Historians treat it as the closest thing we have to England's founding date.
What about the parts of English history that were not good?
A history month that tells only the flattering half is not history. 1,100 years holds invention, law, and the fight to end the slave trade, and it holds conquest, empire, and harm. Learning all of it is the point, and a country confident enough to look at its whole record, is a country worthy of celebration.
Does this take anything from Scotland, Wales or Ireland?
Nothing at all. St Andrew's, St David's, and St Patrick's days, are long established and well loved, and we consider Scotland, Wales, and Ireland our kin. St George's Day already exists, but it is not tied to a date we can point to and say: this is when England began. The 12th of July 927 is that date, and that is what we want to celebrate.
Who is it for?
Everyone. If you live here, love the history, or just fancy a good day out with a bit of story behind it, you are welcome. That is the whole point: it's a birthday party after all!
What would actually happen on the 12th of July 2027?
Whatever people make of it: a talk, a feast, a village fair, an open day at a museum, a lesson at school. We are asking for the day to be recognised and for the month around it to be a season anyone can join, in their own way. We can take inspiration from the many other community celebrations represented in our country.
Who is behind England 927?
Greystokes Foundation, whose charity registration is in progress. It is community-run and will be funded by donations and other activities coming in the future. We are not affiliated with the UK Government or any other organisation, and we will be straight about how money is spent. We don't like the word "transparent" - nobody believes people that say that anymore, so we'll just be true to the rule of Chivalry we so openly venerate.
